Have Your Say about The Big Issue: • email email@example.com • post The Big Issue, GPO Box 4911, Melbourne, Victoria 3001 • facebook The Big Issue Australia • twitter @thebigissue • website thebigissue.org.au/your-say/ The Fiction Edition is always such an exceptional showcase of talent. I’m pleased not to miss out! In the meantime, I have the latest edition of TBI to entertain me. The quality never disappoints. The publication and its vendors remain an important source of community connection. A heartfelt thank you to all members of The Big Issue team. Christa, Perth, WA FACEBOOK FRIENDS Cathy Bedwell I would LOVE to be stuck in a lift with Russell Brand. He’s like a spiritual guru for me. Riveting to listen to. He is genuinely trying to make the world a better place. John Chabowski-Downward I must say one thing about the piece by Ricky French (in Ed#492). It is a sad day in our culture, and current standards of parenting, when parents think that Williamstown [in Melbourne] is such a dangerous place that they can’t allow their children to go on excursions or have unsupervised lunch. In my day we were expected to find responsible independence, and mollycoddling was not good if you wanted real individuals. Nic Johnston For a very long time I avoided The Big Issue vendors simply because I was ignorant; I thought it was a socialist magazine being sold by bums. After an education of how selling The Big Issue helps vendors, I made a resolution at the beginning of the year to buy the magazine. It’s the only magazine where I don’t see the cost as an issue. I will not pay $6 for another magazine, but will always make sure I have $10 for my vendor to give him a little bit more, because he is making an effort and always wishing every one that walks past him a good night or weekend, whether or not anyone says anything back. A CAM BODIAN ISSUE? On my way to visit a friend in Cambodia, I stopped into a newsagent in Darwin and brought a pile of magazines for him – political commentary, arts and culture, current events – and then scored a copy of The Big Issue (Ed#492) outside the supermarket. Sitting in Phnom Penh in the rain, the quality of the journalism and the sheer interest value of The Big Issue was much better than the others. Simply a great read. Could such a magazine be possible in Cambodia? Apparently the literacy rate is relatively high, but their many homeless people are reduced to begging. And what sort of content would be of interest? Michael Christie, Millner, NT As this edition’s Letter of the Fortnight writer, Michael receives a copy of Salman Rushdie’s new book, Two Years Eight Months & Twenty-Eight Nights (see review on p37). Andrea Howard Thanks Big Issue – I have loved having my little bus escape each day... What a great edition (Fiction Edition, Ed#491)! Especially enjoyed the quirky ‘Ninehearts’ by Maree Kimberley and the gentle ‘Dream a Highway’ by Emily Bitto. Thanks for the daily escape. Now I am looking forward to reading some of the writer’s full novels. Bel McQuillen Big thanks and shout out to your seller on the corner of George and Market streets, Sydney where I bought my copy. Not only was he friendly and upbeat, but at a busy intersection he was keeping people safe by asking them to move back from the kerb and pointing out buildings of interest. He was wishing people a happy day and, to be honest, was a fantastic ambassador for Sydney. Christine Grodd Fiona’s ‘Culture Police’ page is my favourite part of every edition of TBI! Denis Hegarty I love The Big Issue. Am so fortunate that my vendor, Gerry, visits our office each fortnight. That Crossword, the ‘Hearsay’ article, ‘Vendor Profile’ and Fiona ‘Culture Police’ Scott-Norman’s write-ups are among my absolute faves! Chrissy Ryan Have only just finished the Fiction Edition (Ed#491). You said you had loads of entries...so can’t we have one quarterly, monthly? Absolutely fantastic! @bronmilkins Anyone else love reading @thebigissue? I love buying, reading and having a good conversation with the vendors.
