They were great to meet and very friendly towards everyone they spoke to. They made my night. Michael P sells The Big Issue at North Melbourne station and Sim Supermarket, West Footscray, Melbourne. CHOO-CHOO-CHOOSE Sorry I haven’t been around, I was away crook; now I am back. I collect and run train models and have just got two engines. Sales from the magazine will help me pay for them, so thanks for buying. Mark JW sells The Big Issue at Milsons Point, Sydney. STEVIE My best friend at The Big Issue is Stevie, He’s a joker, a lad, a burning light, Stevie is afflicted with cerebral palsy, And sometimes he’s just not quite right. See what Steve sees, Stevie says, He doesn’t hold back, no matter what, Some things he utters, belong in the gutter, Some things are brilliant, some things are not. Stevie has no time for the politically correct, See it, feel it, say it, or not. Stevie inspires me to be more like me, Whether windy, rainy, cold or hot. The first to shout a beer, the last to stop, Treats friends as family, family as gold, He sees good in others, no-one can, Has since he was born, will till he grows old. It makes me mad when people see Stevie as “less”, He is human, he cares, he loves, An intellectual disability he carries, yes, But time after time, he rises above. Not only alive, he is thriving Not only “full” human, he really makes me try, Nothing makes a bad day obsolete, Like meeting with Stevie, to see the twinkle in his eye. Mark W sells The Big Issue at The Body Shop and Hungry Jacks, Adelaide. DAY OF THE ANZACS Men and women yawn A long time has passed This morning they march. Their mates long gone Still their buddies linger on Standing in the dark A few blokes bark They’ve all left their mark. At the going down of the sun Our war they had won Let’s give them all praise So we all could be raised. Bob S sells The Big Issue on Park St, Town Hall, Sydney. THE GREATEST SHAVE In March, I had my hair shaved off to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. My goal was $560, but I raised $588.80. I love doing it and have done it every year for the past six years! Thank you to all my sponsors for supporting me each year. Sarah W sells The Big Issue on cnr William and High sts, Fremantle. Stories, poems and pictures by Big Issue vendors and friends One day last week I had a great day for sales! There were people collecting donations for Swan Animal Haven near my pitch, so I decided to support them by donating some of the money I’d made from selling The Big Issue that day. I love dogs, so I was happy to share some of my earnings. As you can see I also got to meet two of their lovely dogs, Coco and her mate! Joshua P sells The Big Issue at Carillon Arcade, Murray St Mall, Perth.
