The Big Issue : Edition 576
TED TALKS THE BEST PART of Christmas, aside from the presents and pavlova (see p41), is those annual catch-ups with far-flung family and friends. It’s acknowledging those people who matter most in our lives. Here at The Big Issue, that means a celebration of our vendors, their festive reflections and messages of hope, heart and humour in our annual Big Wish You special. For our cover star Ted, the highlight of his year to date is starring on the cover of this very magazine: “It’s a real shock, but I’m really delighted to do it... I wish everyone peace and happiness.” It’s a bumper edition, with 16 extra pages of Christmas cheer, stories and recipes. And it tops a cracker of a year for The Big Issue – we’ve celebrated our 22nd year with the launch of digital payments! If you’re looking for a way to give your vendor an extra lift these holidays, we urge you to download the Beem It app on your smartphone. It’s an easier payment option for vendors – you can get all the deets on page 6. Another bonus for our vendors this Christmas is a bump in the cover price of The Big Issue – which has been the same since 2015. From this edition, the magazine will sell for $9. The price rise means your vendor will now earn more money, making a profit of $4.50 with each edition sold. I’m sure you’ll agree, there’s no-one more deserving of a pay rise. From all of us, thank you and Merry Christmas! Amy Hetherington, Editor » ‘Your Say’ submissions must be 100 words or less, contain the writer’s full name and home address, and may be edited for clarity or space. YOUR SAY ED’S LETTER LOVE & HOPE I have just finished reading The Big Issue Ed#573, which I purchased on one of my few trips into Brisbane city. I was moved by the wonderful stories of compassion, hope and love that radiated out to me. It has restored my hope in humanity above the doom and gloom that seems to fill the airwaves these days. Thank you to all who have shared part of their journeys and live in hope for a better world for us all. Diane Sattler, Woodford, Qld As winner of this edition’s Letter of the Fortnight, Dianne wins a copy of Toni Jordan’s new novel The Fragments. Nathan is our guy who stands on the corner of Creek and Adelaide Streets. He is so inspirational and cheery. He makes my day with his enthusiastic “Good mornings” or “Good afternoons”. He’s great to have a chat, too. We very much miss him when he is not there and hope he is okay. Love my calendar, but would love to see more Brisbane people in it! Margaret Summersford, Forest Lake, Qld I’m really pleased you’ve begun publishing recipes in The Big Issue. They just keep getting better and better. I have tried making most of them. Some have become firm favourites with my family, particularly the vegetarian dishes, like Matt Preston’s Cauliflower Mac and Cheese [Ed#562] and Simon Bryant’s Dal [Ed#566]. I think it is terrific to have big names in the culinary world share their secrets with easy-to- get ingredients and simple instructions. And I also love that there have been some regular cooks in there, too. Georgia Brooks, Glen Waverley, Vic Thanks for the article ‘Life on Manus’ by Katherine Smyrk [Ed#572]. Abdul Aziz Muhamat, one of the about 600 hostages our government is holding on Manus, must be freed, must be brought here with all the rest, and those on Nauru, for rehabilitation, and to somehow get on with their lives. I think of my father who arrived in New Zealand, a refugee from Austria, in 1940. Was he detained? No. He married the person who became my mother.
