The Big Issue : Edition 443
Some children arrive for their first day of school without having achieved basic developmental milestones, such as recognising letters and shapes, using complete sentences or recognising the names of simple objects in a picture book. These children can spend the rest of their school years trying to catch up, and many never do. At Good Beginnings we believe every Australian child should grow up safe, happy and healthy. We are a national children’s charity, building better outcomes for children and their families in vulnerable communities through effective early intervention and practical parenting programs, so that every Australian child has the opportunity for a good beginning in life. Our programs are free to children and families and include supported playgroups and literacy programs, fathering initiatives, at-home volunteer visits for new parents and intensive family support. We now have over 140 programs across every state and territory in Australia, based at Good Beginnings Child & Family Centres or at partner primary school sites. Since 1997 Good Beginnings has helped over 50,000 young children and their families. Our programs help improve lives for children in vulnerable communities, and are also a sound investment in Australia’s future.
