THE BIG ISSUE 6 – 19 JUNE 2014 19 Waltzing Matildas ALTHOUGH THE SOCCEROOS may not obtain much more than invaluable World Cup experience, it’s worth noting Australia has another admirably performing football team: the Socceroos’ female equivalents, the Matildas. Far and away Australia’s most successful football team, the Matildas have won the Asian Cup (they were runners-up to Japan just recently), made quarter-final appearances in two consecutive Women’s World Cups, and are ranked 11th in the world. So while the Socceroos will need to call on the Matildas’ ‘never say die’ motto, Australia’s footballing hopes won’t be entirely dashed this month.
