Those people, who roam the streets asking every person who crosses their path for “a dollah, mate”. The nice ones say, “Hey lady, could you please spare me a dollar?” and the rude ones say, “Hey lady, got a dollar on ya?” I’m a polite person, so I wait until they have finished their sentence before I say, “Sorry, no”. Who knows what those people are spending their money on? Probably ciggies and alcohol. I’m always tempted to ask where the money is going and how they ended up in this situation. And I’m tempted to buy them a sandwich from the nearby 7-11, but the fear of inconvenience deters me. They always ask when I’m waiting for a tram. What if I miss my tram? I’ll have to wait for the next one. It is awkward having those people around. I don’t understand how they have the boldness to ask a total stranger for money and not expect to pay it back. What’s more, I don’t understand how they have the rudeness to interrupt someone’s else’s peace. How selfish must they be, not to care about how that someone feels and to not ask about their lives? And to judge them as someone with money simply because they are dressed well? Their selfishness baffles me. How is it possible that someone could be so inconsiderate to another? Elizabeth Loke, Balwyn, Vic FACEBOOK FRIENDS The Big Issue Australia Congratulations to our vendor of the fortnight, Jock from Perth, featured in Ed#459 of the magazine! Hien Nguyen I read his profile from the magazine. What a wonderful person to get through all that hardship and still have a positive outlook on life. Well done, Jock! RAZER RULES Just picked up your most recent issue and thanks once again for a stellar read. My heartfelt thanks go to Helen Razer for breaking a number of taboos for me with her ‘We’re Not Worthy!’ column. Firstly, the issue of how women’s insecurities shouldn’t be a marketable commodity because that in itself actually creates most of these perceptions of insecurities. Secondly, that women declaring low self- esteem and ‘not feeling beautiful’ have, in fact, generally reasonable self-esteem, not to mention probably tending towards the narcissistic end of one spectrum or another and actively seeking attention through their complaint. Thanks for hitting the spot for me, Helen Razer! Hayley Radke, Auchenflower, Qld Hayley wins a copy of Jack White’s new album, Lazaretto. (See our review on p37). BIG ISSUE BIRTHDAY! The Big Issue Australia We’re celebrating 18 years and 9 million magazines. Thanks for supporting 4500 Big Issue vendors since 1996! 449 likes Wendy Purton What a fantastic achievement! I went into the kitchen at work this afternoon to make a cuppa and what do I see on the TV? An item about Big Issue vendors, featuring none other than my regular vendor, Russell! He’s popping up everywhere – there was also an article about him in my local paper this week. Jarrod Watt You made me feel old (I remember buying the first issue back in the 20th century). But, then again, you make me feel hope. For the last 18 years you’ve consistently delivered a great publication and fostered great writers, while others write eulogies for print media. Huzzah and a big High-Five to all your distributors around the country. And thanks for coming to Ballarat! Laura Donovan Congratulations, it’s a wonderful magazine. Happy birthday to you all! Craig Townsend Congratulations, there are thousands of great people that The Big Issue Australia is responsible for helping turn their lives around. Well done! @bondeyeview Congratulations on 9 million magazine sales! That’s a lot of lives you’ve changed – wow. @JustinRandle_ Happy 18th Birthday to @thebigissue, always a great read, particularly the vendor profiles.
