Best wishes to all of you for a peaceful 2015. Alison, Brunswick, Vic It is with trepidation that I approach the New Year without the invaluable guidance of Quick Fix. If you were to let either of the Weldon boys go, too, I would be totally adrift. Andrew Bunney, SA I bought a number of calendars and different editions of The Big Issue from Con at the Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne, which I later sent or gave to my family and friends over the festive season. I told him to keep the change. He is quiet but sometimes we get to chat. Afterwards I went to Brunetti cafe where, after a meal, I left a couple of magazines on the table. I went back to Con to buy another calendar and then exactly at that time two other Big Issue vendors I have bought from in the past joined us. It felt like nice serendipity – a gathering of outsiders a day before New Year’s Eve. Helen, via snail mail, no address provided A healthy and successful 2015 to all at The Big Issue. I thoroughly enjoyed Greg Foyster’s ‘A Call to Inaction’ (Ed#473). While I totally agree with his sentiments, he didn’t go far enough into this matter. An Annual Day indeed! For many years I have been advocating that we do away with our seven day week concept of 168 hours and replace it with an eight day week of similar duration. Each day will therefore be of 21 hours. For the first seven days we will pretty much do what we always do to pass the time, HOWEVER, on the eighth day, we do nothing, absolutely nothing. Shops will be closed, public transport shut, pubs, cafes, cinemas, airports all closed, we don’t drive; if we have to move at all, we walk. We just stop, THANKS FOR THE HOSPITALITY I moved to Melbourne a year ago and found myself greeted each morning at Parliament Station by the joyful humour of Craig selling The Big Issue. In a big city knowing no one and feeling the city to be cold and hard, it was refreshing to discover its people were friendly and humorous. Ever since, I have been a loyal customer and love the morning jokes. Thank you, Craig, for rolling out the welcome mat to all of Melbourne. We love your hospitality! Robyn Cannizzarorn, Malvern East, Vic Robyn receives a copy of Sleater- Kinney’s new album, No Cities to Love (see the review on p37). The Big Issue calendar arrived on my doorstep the day before Christmas. Great timing and I’m enjoying the profiles of vendors and their pets: a reminder of the pleasure pets have given me over so many years. I’m also enjoying the December issue. Usually I treat myself to books for my birthday in early January, but this year took out a subscription for The Big Issue. Already a good decision. Thanks for your excellent publication, and looking forward to a reflect, refresh, enjoy the company of family and do not much else. And yes, it could be a kind of secular Sabbath for everyone. Please join me. Kim McDonald, Rockingham, WA We were at Sydney’s Central Station, feeling blessed as we had just had a wonderful holiday. There was a young man selling your mag. I just felt a need to do the right thing. My partner gave this nice man, who has obviously had enormous life challenges, an extra $20. We should have given more. We read your mag and loved reading about Peter Barry (Ed#474). You see, my partner and I are alcoholics, but function relatively okay as far as society is concerned. Thank you. You give us all hope, no matter if we are rich or poor. Sherilee Bucklin, Belmont, NSW FACEBOOK FRIENDS Sarah Colgan Only just got around to reading my Christmas TBI – love Helen Razer; she makes me laugh out loud! @nobodysmuppet Hug a @thebigissue vendor, #Sydney. I just did and I’m buzzing now. @YvonneZipper @thebigissue 2015 calendar is fabulous! Big shout out to Jeff who sold me mine at Parliament Stn who signed his month for me.
