BIG IN NEWCASTLE Last November I started selling The Big Issue up in Newcastle just outside the market town on weekends on either Saturday or Sunday. The results have been really good with sales results between 30 and 40. Most people say that it’s great to see us up here instead of having to go to Sydney. Adrian sells The Big Issue at Newtown Station, Sydney, and in Newcastle. COMEDY REVIEW The Big Issue Vendor Mariann B in Home Truths at Newport Bowls Club, Victoria, April 2015 **** After selling The Big Issue for many years, writing feature articles for the magazine and participating in WSE shifts, Melbourne vendor Mariann B gave further proof of her versatility (and courage) recently by making her debut as a stand-up comedian. In a show also featuring experienced performers Stella Kinsella and Mandy Nolan, staged during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Mariann – accompanied by a stuffed dog called Ian – wittily and perceptively explored life as a TBI vendor. “See this badge? It has my name on it. It’s because the bosses think we’re all the same; they can’t tell us apart. On the days I don’t wear it, they call me Bruce.” Her characterisation of Vendor Support stalwart Kirstie was spot on; comments about the Editor, however, were well wide of the mark (“He sits in his ivory tower* all day dreaming up weird little ideas to wreck the magazine...”) Apart from some understandable first-night nerves, Mariann’s segment went well and prompted enthusiastic applause from the audience, which included several of her Big Issue friends and colleagues. Judith Lucy, look out... Mr Ed * Not ivory; bluestone. CAN WE SAVE THE PLANET? As the days go by I wonder Tony Who will save the polar bear? Who will save the tiger? If we only care about the economy The only animals we will have in the future Are the dog, the cat and the budgie The rest will be in the zoo. You have to learn to love the animals And be conservationists too If we can save the planet And hope Tony loves animals, too. Daniel K sells The Big Issue at Cibo, cnr Rundle and Frome Streets, Adelaide. NOT ANOTHER STATISTIC I am so worn and tired from burying people in this world of temptations and terrors. Whatever happens, I will not use drugs today. I don’t want to be another statistic. All that will get me is two lines in the newspaper and a minute’s silence at AA for a week. No way, I definitely want to die clean. I lost another friend and I’m angry and sad, but mostly I am tired of it. Andrew W sells The Big Issue outside Woolworths in Potts Point, Sydney. Stories, poems and pictures by Big Issue vendors and friends GREAT SCOTT In August 2013, I sold The Big Issue with Denise Scott outside Flinders Street Station [see above]. She is a very nice lady. On Sunday 29 March I had the pleasure of seeing her in a stand-up comedy show. Denise, you are the funniest person going around. I never laughed so much in all my life. I’ve seen Col Elliot, Kevin (Bloody) Wilson and Judith Lucy, but none of them hold a candle to you. That show was hilarious, absolutely hilarious. Good on you, Denise, and I will be going every year. Jeff sells The Big Issue outside QV, Melbourne, and Parliament and Footscray Stations. Response from Denise Scott: Wow! Thanks, Jeff! You can review me any day! We were quite the team selling The Big Issue together at Flinders Street. Good times. COMEDIAN DENISE SCOTT WAS PAIRED UP WITH MELBOURNE VENDOR JEFF FOR THE BIG ISSUE’S 2013 CELEBRITY SELLING PROMOTION.
